1 dead, 16 hurt in SR-60 crash in Osceola County

A deadly crash in Osceola County shut down a road Wednesday morning. State troopers have had the road blocked as they continue to piece together what happened in the crash. According to Osceola County fire officials, crews were called around 6 am to a crash at SR-60 and Peavine Road, west of Yeehaw Junction. The crash involved a 2017 Dodge Ram, 2007 Mitsubishi Box Truck and a motor coach. In an update, officials said that one person inside a pickup truck was killed. This individual was identified as a 52-year-old man from Port Saint Lucie. FHP said the drivers of the semi and pickup trucks were the two airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Officials say the people on this bus were inmates from a Polk County Correctional Facility who were traveling to their work-release program in Okeechobee. They were taken to hospitals and are expected to be OK. Investigators believe the Dodge Ram traveling westbound entered the eastbound lanes in an attempt to pass a vehicle. As a result, it directly entered the path of the box truck. Both drivers swerved to try to avoid a crash, but they collided. The motor coach was unable to avoid the collision. As of 1 pm, a roadblock for both directions on State Road 60 was in place for the investigation. NOTE: An update from Osceola Fire officials stated that two people were dead and 18 were injured, but Florida Highway Patrol said this is not correct.
